How I read now
I used to feel guilty about not finishing books. Then I read somewhere — I don’t remember where, which is the joke — that the average person who finishes a book remembers about as much as the average person who reads the first third and quits.
So now I quit a lot. I keep a stack of seven or eight in progress. I read the one I feel like reading. If I haven’t picked one up in a month, I shelve it without ceremony.
This has made reading enjoyable again, the way it was when I was twelve and didn’t know books were supposed to be improving.
